Food Adulteration!

Did you know?
Sulphites are hidden and undeclared in a whole range of foods and food ingredients. They contaminate foods via animal antibiotics and stock feed, herbicides and pesticides sprayed on fruits and vegetables and also in processed foods as both a processing aid and preservative.

Today I would like to talk about its use as a processing aid.
The biggest culprit is corn. This falls under the names of corn starch, maize starch, maize flour, maize, corn flour and of course our good old glucose syrup and for the rest of the world, High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) — also called glucose-fructose syrup in the UK, glucose/fructose in Canada, and high-fructose maize syrup in other countries — comprises any of a group of corn syrups that has undergone enzymatic processing to convert some of its glucose into fructose to produce a desired sweetness1.

Quick intro to sulphites:
Sulphites have been associated with the full range of food intolerance symptoms including headaches, IBS, behaviour disturbances, and skin rashes, but are best known for their effects on asthmatics, since the well publicised salad bar deaths of the 1970s and 80s when there were hundreds of reports of severe reactions and at least 12 asthmatic deaths from eating salads that had been sprayed with sulphites in restaurants. This use was banned in the USA in 1986, but a move by the United States’ FDA in 1990 to prohibit the use of sulphites on frozen french fries was defeated on procedural grounds in a court battle with the potato industry.

Sulphites are used in increasing amounts as a food preservative or enhancer. They may come in various forms:
220 Sulphur dioxide
221 Sodium sulphite
222 Sodium bisulphite
223 Sodium metabisulphite
224 Potassium metabisulphite
225 Potassium sulphite
228 Potassium bisulphate

Sulphites are counted among the top nine food allergens, but a reaction to sulphite is not a true allergy. It may cause breathing difficulty within minutes after eating a food containing it or migraines. Asthmatics and possibly people with salicylate sensitivity (aspirin sensitivity) are at an elevated risk for reaction to sulphites. The reaction is not often fatal; however, the individual must immediately go to the emergency room. Other symptoms include sneezing, swelling of the throat, and hives2.

No declaration on label:
So the first thing you will notice is that sulphites will not be declared on the label of food containing glucose syrup. In some cases it MAY be declared under “allergy advice” but most of the time it is NOT even listed there.

This is because there are two loop holes in the law that allow for sulphites and other food chemicals to be present without legal requirement of their declaration.

Glucose syrup is a highly addictive chemical substance. It is as far from nature as you could possibly get. It starts its life soaking in sulphuric acid (used in your cars battery as battery acid), it then has acids and bases added to balance ph levels then enzymes are added to further break down starches.

Glucose syrup is a Frankenstein science, laboratory food chemical and really ends up having nothing to do with corn or maize. Really, it is and I am sorry to tell you this but let’s get real about what is going on here folks. Glucose syrup is highly addictive and creates an “allergy addiction” to those who consume it thus leading to the consumer becoming dependant on the product this food chemical is in.
